Hi there! If you’re looking for a simple Spring pick-me-up project, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we are going to create a beautiful and functional outdoor tiki planter that will not only keep your outdoor space bug free, it will literally take you 5-10 minutes max to create. Most things you might already have tucked away in your shed! If not, don’t worry, I have some links for you below to find all of the items you will need.
To start, you’re going to want to find a planter(I chose the ones pictured below, size and quality is amazing) that is large enough to fit 1-3 tiki torches, just depends on the look you are going for. For my project, I chose a planter that was 16” in diameter and one that was 12” in diameter. For each of these, I used two tiki torches and could have had room for another. **One thing to note is that these did not come with a drainage hole. These are staying on our screened in porch but if you are planning on placing them outside where they may be exposed to rain, be sure to drill a hole or choose a planter that already has one.**
Once you’ve found your perfect planter, you’re going to fill it about 3/4 with sand. I had some lying around in the shed from my little ones sandbox, so this was an easy step. Another option would be filling with extra stone, but since I had sand lying around, it was a much more cost efficient option for me! I used about a bag and a half of play sand from Lowe’s.
Once you’ve filled your planter with sand, you’ll want to lay out how you’d like to place your torches. I simply chose to do mine side by side. Depending on the height of your planter, you may want to also pre-fill it with a layer or two of some rocks and then place your torches in. You’ll want the wicks almost flush to just above the rim of your planter for easy future lighting. Once your torches are at the right height, you can leave them in and then gently pour your rocks in around them. For this large planter, I used ¾ of a bag of marble rock from lowes and topped my final layer with white rock from amazon. Both linked below.
For this planter, I wanted to give it a little bit more color. Hello faux succulents!! I wanted something with no maintenance for this, since it will be outside and it isn’t the best habitat for a real plant. These faux plants from amazon were the perfect size and look for what I was going for. I’d recommend adding any plants with a pot prior to filling with rocks to make things easier, mine were just stems. If you already filled in, don’t worry, simply select where you’d like to add your plant and remove some rock from that area, place the plant and then fill back in with necessary rocks.
Another option for adding in some color would be different faux plants, colored stone/rocks, etc. I can’t ever turn down suucculents, but I’ve linked some other fun options for you here! The best part about this project is that it’s so simple and neutral that you can easily spruce it up and make it your own look!
Seriously, this is one of the simplest projects to do with little time and little materials! Like I said, you may already have some of the items laying around and ready to use. Get creative with it and please share your creations!
Happy Spring!
